COMMON QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
WHAT IS THIS ORGANIZATION?
The National Baton Twirling Alliance-USA (NBTA-USA) was initiated as a result of Don Sartell’s inability to host the event, formally known as AYOP, due to doctor’s orders and the closing of the offices that once housed NBTA, ABC and the National Baton Twirling Museum. The decision to form this organization was not taken lightly, but one that was made after many conversations with Don. This new non-profit organization is designed to give opportunities to innovate and grow twirling through a commission based format. The organizational structure will allow the 200+ commission members to help guide our sport forward. It will rely on the advice and guidance of those Don honored with the title of Major. A personal invitation was extended to them by Major Beverly Johnson and Major Joanne Schlueter.
WHAT IS CHANGING?
Nothing is changing for athletes, judges and coaches! Only the organizational structure is changing. It is our desire to uphold the traditions that made NBTA great! The importance of Solo as the premier event, the 3-part pageant with its long history, caption scoring for judging consistency, the variety of teams and corps disciplines that open twirling to a larger group of participants and events for all ages and skill levels to build the elite of tomorrow while providing opportunities for everyone will remain intact.
WHAT ABOUT THE NAME?
There are 3 reasos for this name. First NBTA-USA is to both honor the past and reinforce the future. Second is the name National Baton Twirling Association trademark is no longer owned by Don Sartell or the American Baton Company. In addition, the term Alliance is defined as a relationship based on an affinity in interests, nature, or qualities. This is a great description of this organization’s structure and desires.
WHY NOW?
The time IS now! It is clear that NBTA needs to move forward as a non-profit commission based organization. At the conclusion of the National Baton Twirling Championships at Notre Dame, NBTA-USA will be ready to kick off the new season with commissions fully operational for the fall of 2024. This period of time also gives the alliance the ability to support the 2024 National Baton Twirling Championships under the co-direction of Dennis Kaminski and Mike Stoeber.
